In the pages of Ponder Awhile, poet Mohit Misra takes the reader on an introspective journey through the unexplored depths of the heart and soul. Touching on a variety of topics, ranging from life to love to war to the nature of God Himself, Misra's collection expounds on questions that have haunted the corners of the human mindscape for centuries, offering his own thought-provoking insights along the way.

Consider, for example, this passage from "What":

"What we have been taught is so full of rot,
Such beauty lies when it is all shot.
Whatever you do try your best,
Unto God leave the rest."

And this one from "God":

"What have I to do with god?
You are his creation, you are a part of him.
When do I see, meet god?
Whenever you really decide to,
When you want nothing."

Such passages are reflective of the overall philosophical tone of Misra's collection - one that will certainly strike a chord deep within the more progressive thinkers who read it.

At times, Misra also successfully turns his insights inward, offering the reader a profound glance into the inner workings of his own heart and mind, keenly illustrated by this passage from "Idiot":

"Fool make some money some people shout,
Poetry you will die broke without a doubt.
I must write I keep telling them,
I have been given the signs to use the pen."

And in this one from "Once Again":

"Sometimes I feel I will never learn,
From the mistakes I made
when I crashed in my last turn.
As much as I laugh I must cry,
Simple rules of this game before I die."

For the simple, yet penetrating stances that it takes on the full gamut of emotion and experience, Ponder Awhile provides the reader with an eye-opening look into the deeper recesses of our collective human soul. An enjoyable read, and one that is sure to leave many substantially more enriched for having read it.

In 2003, while sailing in the Atlantic ocean, merchant sailor Mohit Misra had a moment of enlightenment. So much so, the previously confirmed atheist gave up his career to begin writing and convey his thoughts through couplets/dohas. The result is a collection of poems found in Ponder Awhile.

Honestly, poetry is not my typical reading genre; readers of this review should keep that in mind. I found some of Mohit's offerings did cause me to ponder awhile. Those dealing with religion, governments, and being one people without prejudice were the more powerful offerings. To me poetry, like any good novel, movie, or art, causes one to reflect, take notice and delve a little deeper into the human condition. A few of these poems did just that for me.

The remainder of the book is filled with some other creative though simple poems of everyday life which did not stay with me as much. The poems about women seemed somewhat superficial but perhaps this was purposely done by the author to convey the emotions and reactions he was having were also superficial yet powerful, consuming, fleeting, and sometimes confusing.

Overall, an eclectic selection of poems.

Ponder Awhile, by Mohit K. MisraPonder Awhile, by Mohit K. Misra (Booksurge, 2008) This book is a poetry collection from Mohit K. Misra, a Navigating Officer in the Merchant Navy. Entering into a state of Samadhi, this author from Bombay intends to leads his readers into a spiritual experience. In 51 poems,

Misra shares a comprehensive view of being, with gentle treatment of subjects like religions, charity, peace, sweet sixteen, and even “Mom.” These poems are worthy of thought and enjoyment.

A self-published book, this volume exhibits the best efforts of the writer. The publisher, however, has clearly emphasized promotion while giving a minimal description of the author’s background. Further, while we enjoy the poetry, we lack a statement of organization or central purpose.

Meanwhile, the book allows us to relax with a thoughtful observer of human experience. As Misra says, “Come back soon; I know you will. No problem if time will stand still.” We wish the best to this young poet and author from India.
